Michelle Carter
I found out about Curves through my niece, Jazz. I lost my twin, Jazz’s Mum, to Breast Cancer and I’m doing this for her and my children. I promised her I would have a figure like her. I like the fact that there are no mirrors at Curves and it’s all real women, all different shapes and sizes. It’s only 30 mins and the staff are really friendly. Since I joined my shape has changed, I have more energy and I’m more confident. I will wear short skirts now which I haven’t done since my early 20’s! My health has improved – I get no colds. My husband gets his arms all the way round me now and my uniform is hanging off me! Lots of people have commented on the improvement. I felt very self-conscious about my size and lacked confidence but I don’t feel self-conscious at Curves because we’re all women together. I had to get myself into the mindset to eat healthily but I’m really proud of myself now because I’ve done it by myself just reducing portion size and cutting out extras.
Michelle has been a Top Star for 5 months in a row and we are so proud of her!
Michelle lost 3st, 6lbs, 39.5 in, and a staggering 6.1% body fat!

I saw the opening advert for Curves in the paper. I needed to tone up and get fitter so I joined. I like Curves because it’s just for ladies, you do it at your own pace and you’re not competing with one another. It’s a more relaxed atmosphere, the girls are friendly and encouraging.
This is the longest I’ve stayed in the same gym and I do the workout 4 times a week. This is my ‘me’ time with no distractions. Walking through the door was the most difficult part because it was something new, but I have never looked back! I feel more confident because my mental mood has been affected by increased fitness – you get that wonderful ‘feel good’ factor after the workout. I lost 10 lb in the first year and I can get into a size 8 now.
Because I am fitter I can accept more challenges. I’ve done the Moon Walk four times –– once in Edinburgh and 3 times in London (2 in one year!). I did the Endurance Workout at Curves for 6 weeks as preparation.
Lost 10 lbs 14 in 2.9% body fat.

I found out about Curves on the internet and I liked the idea of the circuit and the fact that it prescribed only 30 minutes! I chose Curves over a traditional gym because it seemed more friendly and the workout is easy to fit into your lifestyle. Everyone is friendly and you see the results.
I am thinner, fitter, more confident, less tired and have more stamina and can now do things I couldn’t do before. I can walk the dogs for longer without a rest; I have joined Salsa, something I’ve always wanted to do but was self-conscious about my size. I can shop anywhere which is less expensive than just Evans. It was quite difficult to get motivation at first, but the workout goes so quickly and when you see results it makes you want to come to do more!

When I joined Curves I was fully prepared to be told I was too big to use the machines or find I couldn’t cope with them.
However confident you are the idea of showing your shape in a gym full of fit young men and women would be daunting and I think I would have dropped out. At Curves where it’s women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels I felt much more comfortable and I’ve stayed the course!
Before a gastric staple op in April this year I lost a stone. When I returned to Curves after 3 months off I found my muscles had wasted so much it was a struggle at first with some of the machines that I’d had no problem with before.
My walking improved from losing 3st but it has improved a lot more quickly since I’ve been back to Curves and got some strength back in my muscles.
I don’t know what I would have done without Curves. I’m not sporty so I’ve never got into other forms of exercise and my size would probably have been against me. Even walking was out as it jarred my knees and didn’t provide upper body exercise.
Lost: 5st, 11lbs; 52 .5. Dropped 10 dress sizes! Our Miss September 2009

How did you hear about Curves?
There was a poster and some flyers about Curves up in my church. I had broken my ankle and had it pinned and been on crutches for 7 months. I was very unfit and had put on weight. I had tried LA Fitness but it was impersonal with lots of skinny girls in leotards and they wouldn’t suspend my membership when I broke my ankle.
What made you join Curves?
When I started at Curves I was still doing physio and couldn’t move my foot. I did so well at Curves the physio discharged me. Curves is enjoyable and motivating with very friendly and encouraging staff. Apart from holidays I’ve never missed a workout.
How has Curves made a difference to your life?
My ankle was back to normal within 3 months. I felt much better; all my joints were stronger and my blood pressure was lower. I’ve always yo-yo dieted and never got anywhere but with the Curves workout and their Weight Management Program I’ve lost nearly 2 stone and kept it stable for 2 years.
Maureen is our No. 5 Top Star from Jan 2009 and proves that the Curves Workout really strengthens your joints and lowers high blood pressure.

How did you hear about Curves?
I saw the advert when it first opened and thought I would like to try it but I was a bit busy at the time. After my husband passed away I wanted to get out every day so I signed up.
What made you join Curves?
I had my knees replaced (one 2 yrs ago, the other 5 years ago) and I wanted to keep fit and active and keep flexibility in my joints.
At Curves there are no heavy weights so it’s manageable for me. It’s definitely better that it’s just ladies and the environment is so friendly and the staff are so helpful instructing us. At other gyms people are not so friendly.
How has Curves made a difference to your life?
Since joining Curves I have dropped my painkiller dose from 8 to 4 tablets daily; I feel much fitter; it helps me get out every day and build friendships. I meet people at Curves and we have a laugh. Curves Smart has made me work harder and I enjoy that-and I have lost weight! I found the oblique machine hard to get into at first and I had no clue how to use a computer mouse but I have now mastered both. My grandsons wouldn’t believe that I was working out at age 83!

What made you join Curves?
I had just retired and wanted to stay active and not turn into a couch potato!
What do you find different about Curves?
It is not monotonous like other gyms. The workout is fun with lively, paced music and it makes you feel so alive and energised afterwards. The atmosphere is always friendly and it doesn’t matter what age or size you are.
How has Curves made a difference to your life?
I am healthier and more energetic and confident.
What obstacles have you had to overcome?
In June 2008 I was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica. I was treated with steroids- put on 2 stone, was really breathless. After a month’s medical hold I made a personal commitment in January 2009 to start a diet program and get back to Curves. By the end of April I had exceeded my previous fitness level, lost 2 stone and dropped a dress size and I was No. 1 on April’s TOP STARS!

"I am much fitter, healthier and have more energy. The change in my appearance has been commented on by family, friends, colleagues and parents of children at my school." |

“I joined Curves, Gosport at the beginning of August 2007. I have been thrilled with the ease that the programme has fitted into my lifestyle. Working out at Curves 3 times a week is part of my weekly routine. I was obese (17stones and a size 22), did very little exercise (one hour of Pilates a week) and picked on chocolate, sweets and cakes.
Although I was very unfit and very large the staff at Curves were so supportive and encouraging that I’ve never felt my size was a problem. I have consistently lost weight, lost inches by toning up and lost body fat. I have lost 4 stone and dropped 4 dress sizes to 14.
I am much fitter, healthier and have more energy. The change in my appearance has been commented on by family, friends, colleagues and parents of children at my school. I am walking evidence of the benefits of a regular Curves workout”. |

How did you hear about Curves?
Through my friend Sue Hillary.
What made you join Curves?
I had lost a little weight and wanted to tone up and also improve my mobility. I had slowly gained more weight after being diagnosed with Osteo and Rheumatoid arthritis
What is different about Curves?
I never thought I’d say I enjoy coming to a gym but I love it! I like the set circuit and that it’s all women. I don’t feel ignored here and no one can hog the circuit.
How has Curves made a difference to your life?
I feel I have a reason to get out of the house every day. I have stopped using my walking stick and no longer need to use my inhalers daily. I feel so well and have loads of energy. I used to be unable to climb stairs properly, but after 2 weeks of working out at Curves I was almost running up them!
My friends are shocked when I say I enjoy a gym as I used to be a real couch potato!

How did you hear about Curves?
I saw Curves when it first opened but I put it off; then I decided to start in September when I got back from holiday.
What made you join Curves?
I needed to trim up and lose weight.
What is different about Curves?
Curves is not like a gym; it’s more personal, only 30 minutes which is really, really easy to fit in. You are on each machine for a very short time which most people can do. It’s full of ‘normal’ people, not flashy gym bunnies or people just trying to showing off!
How has Curves made a difference to your life?
I have lost weight, I feel much better, like I’ve really done something. It starts my day off really well and I do twice as much as what I would normally.
I feel a bit embarrassed amongst people I don’t know but I feel ok at Curves now.
Kim is our overall No. 5 TOP STAR ACHIEVER since we started in 2007 and is proof of what a little bit of perseverance can do!

How did you hear about Curves?
My friend Jenny StirtonSmith kept nagging me to join. Also after treating my back, my chiropractor encouraged me to join Curves.
What made you join Curves?
I needed to lose weight and tone up after an ‘op’ so I signed up.
What is different about Curves?
It’s women-only, no mirrors, quick and effective - if you put the effort in. I like the fact that you’re only competing with yourself and the machines. In the past I have got totally obsessed about exercise and done too much. At Curves you can’t do that cos it’s only 30 minutes. I feel healthier (don’t get ill nearly so often) and have more energy. It has improved my ‘personal’ relationships and I feel more feminine.
How has Curves made a difference to your life?
I had to have a hysterectomy at the age of 42 and it was hard to find the time, effort and energy to get started but I did! The Fit Island challenge in the summer was a real turning point for me - I wasn’t really trying with my diet but it really motivated me to eat properly and when I started losing weight and inches I felt great and haven’t looked back. I was so chuffed when Fran told me that I was 3rd Top Star overall for 2009 and asked me to be Miss Dec!

How did you hear about Curves?
I passed Curves loads of times but then I made the decision to lose weight at Slimming World and knew I needed to be more active.
What made you join Curves?
I joined Curves because it’s only a 30 min workout.
What is different about Curves?
Curves is not boring and you’re not left on your own. There are lots of different initiatives, games etc. and regular weigh & measure. You get to know everyone and Curves SMART keeps you competing with yourself. I’m really competitive so that keeps me engaged.
How has Curves made a difference to your life?
I am fitter, thinner and feel more steady. My spatial awareness has improved and I have more confidence. I would never have believed I would come to the gym 5 times a week! If I can’t come I get frustrated.
I had to overcome the fear of coming in and people’s reaction to my size and feeling watched. I get really hot & sweaty which makes me feel self-conscious. Finding time in the day was difficult so I plan the meal in the evening to allow time to workout and set the expectation with my family on home time.
Trudy is our overall TOP ACHIEVER since Sep 2009.

How did you hear about Curves?
Several of the staff where I work were enjoying Curves and saying how energised they felt.
What made you join Curves?
I had just given up smoking, put on 1.5 stone and needed to exercise, so I joined. I discovered Curves was friendly, enjoyable and not pressurised. You’re not competing with others; it’s not boring or monotonous-it’s always different. My body never aches after my Curves workout because the stretches are part of the routine. The workout is very achievable for anybody and the staff are all lovely.
How has Curves made a difference to your life?
I have lost a stone, have lots more energy, mentally feel more capable of achieving things and feel much more toned – I like my body now! You feel healthier so you stay committed to a healthier lifestyle. Working out makes me feel a lot more positive about life which boosts my immune system – I have not had a day off work or been ill since I joined Curves!
I never thought I could do anything like this; my sons said I wouldn’t keep it up - I have now been a member more than 2 years, working out daily and maintaining really strong targets. I never miss a workout because it makes you feel so good.
